Building concept
The hospital is composed of three buildings: 1) the original building which was renovated between 1999 and 2002, 2) the new wing which was constructed between 1994 and 1998 and 3) a functional building that hosts the central heating plant.
HVAC concept
The building has its own central heating building which provides heat for the hospital. The boiler was replaced in 1995. Heat recovery is available for the ventilation system.

Lessons learnt | Even newly renovated buildings profit from ongoing commissioning
The hospital consists of three buildings: the original building from 1937/39 which was renovated 2002, a new wing that was constructed 1998 and a functional building that hosts the central heating plant which was erected in 1998. During renovation the buildings were energetically optimized (German standard of 2002) and equipped with a building information system. However this system was not designed to handle the large number of data necessary for energy management. Therefore, this special situation required the installation of a wireless network connecting 3 smartboxes with about 24 measurement points and 38 data points from the building automation system. However, during 2009 the number of beds in the hospital was reduced by about 10 %. The measurements revealed that the building is in a good shape, and reasonably operated. Nevertheless saving potentials between 10 % and 20 % were identified which could be realized by low cost measures. This demonstrates that even newly renovated buildings can benefit from ongoing commissioning.
