Lycée Kyoto Poitiers - The first post-oil high school, using 100% clean energy

Abstract | This high school, the Lycée Kyoto in Poitiers, France, is presented as the first "100% clean energy" high school in Europe. Built by the Region Poitou-Charentes, the high insulated 16500 m2 building includes a 1000 m3 hot water storage linked to a domestic waste incineration plant, a rapeseed oil cogeneration system (88 kW of electricity, 50 kW of heat), a hot water floor heating system, 861 m2 of solar photovoltaic cells, several air handling units with heat recovery, a ventilation flow rate control according to classrooms occupation and an automatic adjustment of lighting according to actual natural light.

Lessons learnt | The building is in use since September 2009. The electricity consumption from the grid is estimated to 5 kWh/m2/year, all other energy needs being covered by renewable energy sources (including domestic waste).
