Ventilation and cooling option appraisal - a client's guide

Reducing the dependency on conventional air-conditioning is often achievable, provided that careful attention is paid to the cooling and ventilation strategies at the design stage. This Guide is written for promoters, funders and building owners who are in the position of briefing a design team on their requirements for ventilating and air-conditioning systems. The Guide provides a checklist of issues to discuss with the design team, in order to achieve an energy-efficient and comfortable building within the available capital and operational budgets.Contents include: an option appraisal; key questions on humidity, ventilation, noise or pollution, internal heat gains and occupied space temperatures; passive cooling strategies; mechanical cooling strategies; and briefing the designer. An appendix provides a comparison of various ventilation and cooling strategies.
