Cool Roofs

This community aims at exchanging information on the technical, policy and market aspects of cool roofs technology among scientists, consulting engineers, manufacturers, policy makers etc.

The mission of the community is to meet and share experiences and knowledge on cool roofs technology. A cool roof is a roofing system that is characterised by high solar reflectance (ability to reflect solar radiation, reducing heat transfer to the building) and high infrared emittance (i.e. faster release of absorbed heat in the form of infrared radiation). This technology is an energy efficient, financially viable and sustainable solution for mitigating the heat island effect and its consequences and for reducing building energy consumption for cooling and improving thermal comfort conditions.

The prime focus is to promote this technology at European and national level and more specifically to accelerate the transfer of knowledge, remove any market barriers, help manufacturers to develop cool roofs products, develop incentives and  programs and educate the public. In this framework, the community will discuss on cool roofing material definition (minimum values, relevant properties), testing procedures and standards for measuring the properties of cool materials, cool roofs performance, cool roof product labeling, explore existing market barriers and explore policy & legislation in view of integrating cool roofs

The main target groups are industrial manufacturers and developers of roofing materials, consulting engineers, designers and architects, researchers, energy auditors, building and housing estate managers, policy makers and officials involved in housing, construction and energy, people involved in standardization and measurment of materials' properties etc.

The community is facilitated in collaboration with the European Cool Roofs project (supported by the IEE Programme) and the European Cool Roofs Council (ECRC). The main objective is to propose and implement an Action Plan for the promotion, market transformation and changing behavior towards cool roofs technology in the European Union. The work is developed in four axes, technical, market, policy and end-users. This Action Plan is steered and further developed by the EC RC that will bring together under the same umbrella all related stakeholders.
