The increased use of renewables, nuclear power, and better energy efficiency, have not kept up with the world's growing demand for power and transport, which is strongest in developing countries. Recession and the collapse of the former Soviet bloc helped industrialised countries to collectively reduce their greenhouse gas emissions over the last two decades, and they are likely to meet the collective Kyoto target of a 5.2 % emissions cut by 2012 as a result.

 To broaden participation in next year’s United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), the United Nations has invited representatives from nine key constituencies, known as major groups, to submit ideas on how the world can move towards sustainable development — a process aimed at promoting economic prosperity and improving the quality of life for everyone, while protecting the environment for present and future generations.

Leaders of 193 countries are set to meet for the next annual U.N. climate summit in November in South Africa, where governments will discuss ways to encourage investments to reach at least $100 billion a year by 2020 toward tackling climate change. Companies that advocate climate change need to have a stronger, unified voice to counteract others that might oppose stronger action, said Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, in a webcast of a meeting of chief executives in London.

The CDP Global 500 report, Accelerating low carbon growth, drawn up by consultants PwC, looked at 396 of the world’s largest corporations. For the first time in ten years, a majority – 68% – report putting climate change at the heart of business strategies, and 74% now have emissions reduction targets up from 65% last year. As a result, 45% of those corporations looked at by the CDP are now reporting lower greenhouse gas emissions as a result of their activities.

The aim was to discuss with the stakeholders of the housing and energy sector and with the Committee of the Regions members, MEPs and Commission ‘s representative, the opportunities that this Directive offers to reduce energy consumption and energy poverty. The conference helped to inform European decision makers of the reality at local level by drawing on information gathered through the POWER HOUSE EUROPE big Green Housing Exchange project financed by the IEE programme.
