Buildings in EU27 Member States represent up to 24 billion m2 of floor space, responsible for 40% of Europe’s energy consumption and 36% of CO2 emissions – both key contributors to climate change. In response, a number of European directives promoting energy efficiency and ambitious goals for achieving nearly zero energy buildings will be enforced in the coming years.   Public buildings are expected to meet these challenges and act as frontrunners. It is time to use the wealth of resources already at our disposal to accelerate change.

Since September 2016, the renovation works at the Province of Liège School of Engineering have been progressing, and now as we move towards the New Year, a new phase has just begun. It involves installing a renewable heating system, the first of its kind in Europe, if not the world.

BRICKER partners were in for a surprise when they convened in Brussels recently for the project’s second review by EC officials.   The demo site team from Liège had secretly set their own agenda, seizing the opportunity to whisk the partners off for a few hours to visit their demo site at the Haute Ecole in Liège. Attendees were as surprised as they were delighted by the behind-the-scenes organisation of the train trip – with Greencom and Acciona on-hand with refreshments.

As part of the European Researchers’ Night, an event was held and co-organised by BRICKER partner Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) . The event set the stage for a series of presentations by young scientists.One of the presentations was the work of students on placement at FBK. They won first prize out of twenty four contenders, much to the delight of their host organisation. The presentation was about the BRICKER project as this was the topic the students were assigned to for their learning experience at FBK.

Mid-April saw the BRICKER project’s first review, a year and a half into the project. Members of the consortium convened in the Belgian capital and delivered presentations in the presence of the Project Officer and Project Technical Advisor.
