We are at a turning point in the road towards a homogenous energy efficiency market. However, the goal is not yet achieved. The future of EPB standards is in the hands of all energy efficiency stakeholders.

REHVA advocates the need for harmonised application of EPB standards across Europe, which needs active involvement of national standardisation bodies and stakeholders, to achieve a harmonized energy performance calculation framework.

In June 2017, the EUSEW 2017 Policy Conference dedicated its over 60 sessions to the several facets of the Clean Energy for All European package. Among them, the session “The role of standardisation towards higher Energy Performance of Buildings”, organized by the European Builders Confederation,  was entirely dedicated to describe how and to which extent the building sector can benefit from standardisation.

In August 2017, after almost 7 years from the issue of mandate M/480, the EPB standards were finally published, thus becoming the national standards in force in EU Member States and in the countries within the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).

The EPB Center (energy performance of a building - EPB) is focused on the international harmonized set of EPB assessment methods and their implementation at national and regional levels. The Center is dedicated to provide stakeholders and interested parties with technical support for the implementation and dissemination of information on the set of EPB standards at national and regional level.   While providing this support the Center will also aim to assist with formulating needs in order to further develop and improve this set of EPB standards.

On last REHVA journal, Jaap Hogeling has announced that the series of 17 EN-ISO Energy Performance Buildings (EPB) standards and 29 EPB EN-standards passed the Final Vote last week of January 2017 and will soon be published.   This set of EPB standards will be the basis for the Energy Performance Buildings assessment in Europe.
