The Role of Demand Side Management (DSM) to Provide Flexibility in Electricity Systems   The share of intermittent renewables in the electricity system is rapidly growing all over the globe. In the EU they will represent 35% of electricity production by 2020 and are expected to reach 50% by 2030. But already today, at peak moments renewables make up for over 50% of production. This is a challenge for network operators, policy makers and regulators, but will also create business opportunities for old and new players.

CHESS SETUP, a European project seeking buildings’ energy self-sufficiency   Low temperature thermal demand (Domestic Hot Water and heating) is worth 50% of the apartment buildings’ needs. A new European project looks for the most efficient solution to cover up this demand with solar energy, even during the months with the lowest level of solar radiation.

So far seasonal storage systems, mostly realised as hot water storage systems, had to be rather large in order to use summer heat for heating during the winter. Smaller storage systems tend to cool down too quickly. Therefore seasonal storage systems are mostly applied for housing estates or large consumers. Within the SolSpaces project, scientists are developing and testing a new solar heating system including an evacuated tube air collector and a thermochemical heat storage system to store solar heat for the use in winter.
