On 16 February 2016, the European Commission unveiled a package of energy security measures to equip the EU for global energy transition. The package sets out a wide range of measures to strengthen the EU's resilience to gas supply disruptions, including moderating energy demand, increasing energy production in Europe (including from renewables), further developing a well-functioning and fully integrated internal energy market, as well as diversification of energy sources, suppliers and routes.

Towards a smart, efficient and sustainable heating and cooling sector   The EU Heating and Cooling Strategy, announced in February 2016 by the European Commission in its relevant Communication, is the first EU initiative addressing the energy used for heating and cooling in buildings and industry, which accounts for 50% of the EU's annual energy consumption.

  COMMUNICATION FROM THE COMMISSION TO THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT, THE COUNCIL, THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COMMITTEE AND THE COMMITTEE OF THE REGIONS   With this Communication, released in February 2016, the European Commission presents the first strategy to optimise buildings' and industries' heating and cooling in order to tackle the massive use of energy, particularly fossil fuels, in the sector. Heating and cooling accounts for 50% of the energy consumption in the European Union, and renewables account for just 18% of this.

The Pan-European Thermal Atlas (PETA) is an interactive map that shows data on the thermal resources available in any region as well as EU-wide thermal demand. PETA maps heat and cooling demand, the local density of both demands, available waste heat resources and the potential for renewable energy sources.
