Do they care about saving energy and preserving the Earth’s resources? “Rooting sustainability starts on the benches of schools,” affirmed UNESCO director-general Irina Bokova at the recent UN Climate Change Conference (COP22) in Marrakech, Morocco.

The study of the EHI Retail Institute performed for the German Energy Agency dena contributes to the information and data basis on the energy use and energy saving potential of retail buildings in Germany. It further examines the results of the previous study “Energy Efficiency in Retail. Analysis of Existing Buildings and their Energy Situation” dated June 2015.

A recently released EHI Retail Institute study conducted on behalf of the German Energy Agency (dena) shows that within the food industry, annual energy costs for smaller shops and specialist stores premises amount to about 74 euros per square metre, on average. At the same time annual electricity and heating bills for larger chain stores and grocery chains sum up to about 57 euros per square metre.

Eine Studie im Auftrag der Deutschen Energie Agentur (dena) zum Energieverbrauch von deutschen Lebensmittelgeschäften ergab für kleinere Läden und Fachgeschäfte mittlere Energiekosten von 74 € pro Quadratmeter Verkehrsfläche und Jahr. Bei größeren Filialen und Lebensmittelketten betragen die mittleren Energiekosten nur 57 €/m²a. Der Unterschied in den Kosten ist u.a. durch ein professionelles Energiemanagement und geringere Kosten für Energieeinkauf und Energieerzeugung bei Lebensmittelketten bedingt.

After status quo analysis, the study recommends for categorization and subcategorization of buildings, a building stock inventory based on Annex I of the EPBD and EUROSTAT. Consequently, the study recommends ten categories for residential (3) and non-residential (7) buildings. Two phase approach has been recommended for the development of reference buildings.
