The recently revised EU Renewable Energy Directive recognises heating and cooling as a key sector in accelerating the decarbonisation of the energy system. In order to facilitate the penetration of renewable energy in the heating and cooling sector, each Member State is required to increase the share of renewable energy supplied for heating and cooling by an indicative 1.3 percentage points as a yearly average for the periods of 2021-2025 and 2026-2030.

The objective of this research is to identify a tool of analysis applicable to school buildings that, through simple input information, can make immediate assessment reduction of energy consumption for heating and associated reduction of CO2emission, as a result of improvements. The definition of a methodology of analysis allows to evaluate preliminarily the energy performance of the whole school building identifying the most problematic buildings and dividing into groups based on the construction and geometry.

The Covenant twinning programme offers cities, regions and provinces across Europe the opportunity to take part in twinning exchanges that aim to increase local authorities’ capacity and knowledge to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

Across Europe, cities work together to develop and demonstrate innovative solutions that help accelerate transition towards a low-carbon, resource efficient, competitive and inclusive economy in urban areas. The Smart Cities Information System (SCIS) is in charge of collecting and analysing data from these solutions, so we are asking cities to share their stories and experiences.
