  Solution sets for zero emission / zero energy school buildings - Guidelines for energy retrofitting   One of the purposes of the School of the Future project is to provide designers and planners with retrofit guidelines for concepts and technologies regarding energy efficiency and good indoor environment quality in school buildings - from simple, but significant energy reduction and indoor environment improvements up to the final target: Zero Emission Schools.

This report, released by the “School of the Future” project, is the final demonstration building report documenting the design, the realisation and the monitoring results of the four school renovation projects in Stuttgart (DE), Cesena (IT), Ballerup (DK) and Drammen (NO).

 Das School of the Future-Projekt wurde im Jahr 2011 als Demonstrationsprojekt im 7. Forschungsrahmenprogramm der Europäischen Union gestartet. Der zugehörige Förderaufruf hatte als Schwerpunkt „Demonstration von Energieeffizienz durch die Sanierung von Gebäuden“. Dabei sollten ganzheitliche Sanierungsmaßnahmen an Gebäuden mit hohem Multiplikationspotential für weite Gebiete Europas geplant, durchgeführt und evaluiert werden. Der Heizenergieverbrauch für die Raumkonditionierung der Gebäude sollte um mindestens 75 % durch die Sanierung reduziert werden.

Throughout the Recast Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) it is requested that “the public sector in each Member State should lead the way in the field of energy performance of buildings” and “buildings occupied by public authorities and buildings frequently visited by the public should set an example”. Among the most promising public building types to act as lighthouse projects are school buildings.

One of the main goals of the demonstration buildings within the FP7 "School of the Future" project is the improvement of the indoor environment quality (air, daylight, acoustic, thermal comfort) with impact on the pupils' performance to be analysed by short-term measurements and questionnaires. This report forms the basis of the evaluation of the indoor enviroment before and after the refurbishment of the 4 demonstration buildings in Germany, Italy, Denmark and Norway.

The aim of the “School of the Future” project is to design, demonstrate, evaluate and communicate shining examples of how to reach the future high performance building level. School buildings and their primary users pupils - the next generations - are in the focus of the project. Both, the energy and indoor environment performance of 4 demo buildings in 4 European countries and climates will be greatly improved due to holistic retrofit of the building envelope, the service systems, the integration of renewables and building management systems.

Immer mehr Schulträger in Deutschland erkennen, dass neue pädagogische Konzepte nicht umsetzbar sind ohne geeignete Räume. Die Schule soll Lebensraum sein und neue, flexible Lernformen unterstützen. Der Einfluss des Schulgebäudes auf die gesamte Lernatmosphäre wird zunehmend in den Fokus gestellt. Das traditionelle Klassenzimmer verliert ebenso an Bedeutung wie der Frontalunterricht. Neu hinzu kommen flexible Räume für Projektarbeiten und Schüleraktivierung, Rückzugsräume für selbstbestimmtes Arbeiten und anderes.
