The school was built in 2012/13 as a public private partnership. The main energy related targets were to achieve passive house standard, to use prefabricated timber facades and renewable energy sources. The building should reach high indoor environment quality and fulfil the measures set in the Norwegian “Cities of the Future” - a collaboration between the government and the 13 largest cities in Norway to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make the cities better places to live.

The 7th International Building Physics Conference (IBPC 2018): “Healthy, Intelligent, and Resilient Buildings and Urban Environments”, aims to advance the collective understanding of the nature and behaviour of the cyber-physical systems in these different scales, how they interact, and what can be done to optimise their design and operation for healthy, intelligent and resilient buildings and urban environments.

Buildings account for around half of the EU’s total energy consumption. As a result, energy efficiency of buildings is a major theme in the European Commission’s Clean Energy for All Europeans package of proposals and a focus of this year’s EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW), which takes place from 21-25 June.
But buildings must be more than just energy efficient of course. As we spend up to 90% of our time indoors, buildings and the environment they create also have a significant impact on our comfort, well-being and even health.

We spend up to 90% of our lives indoors. Yet the air quality inside buildings has been shown to be 2 to 5 times poorer than outdoors. This can also true for modern energy efficient buildings due to increased insulation levels and greater air tightness.

This interdisciplinary guide offers background, research findings, and practical strategies for assessing and improving air quality in hospitals and other healthcare settings. Positing good air quality as critical to patient and staff well-being, it identifies disease-carrying microbes, pollutants, and other airborne toxins and their health risks, and provides localized interventions for reducing transmission of pathogens. Effective large-scale approaches to air quality control are also outlined, from green building materials to hygienic HVAC and air treatment practices.
