NZEB - Near Zero-Energy Buildings

The EPBD recast established that all new buildings have to reach by the end of 2020 the nZEB target set by the Member States. The scope of this report is to provide a CRAVEzero cost spreadsheet, implementing a comprehensive and structured methodology in order to evaluate the LCC with a particular focus on nZEBs.   Methodology adopted

IPEEC’s Buildings Energy Efficiency Task Group (BEET) has just released its seventh publication on energy efficiency in the buildings sector, BEET 7, which focuses on zero energy or emissions buildings (ZEBs). While the precise term varies, ZEBs generally refer to highly efficient buildings that use renewable technology to produce as much energy as they consume over the course of a year. The difficulty lies in the variety of metrics used to establish ‘zero’ energy or emissions, in addition to different energy consumption and production boundaries that make direct comparisons hard.

The region of Navarra is building over 500 nearly zero-energy building (NZEB) units to provide affordable and energy efficient homes for their citizens. Nearly zero-energy buildings have very low energy consumption due to their design and the materials used in their construction and reduce energy consumption by 75% compared to standard buildings. The project will also contribute towards social integration and urban regeneration through the provision of affordable rental housing.

District heating (DH) systems are key systems for the de-carbonization of heating energy in European Cities. In order to allow for this transition, while guaranteeing competitive energy costs, conversion of DHs is required. DH operation temperature needs to be reduced in order to increase the performance of renewable systems and operation criteria needs to be adopted for the introduction of weather-dependent, distributed heat sources such as solar systems.

EIT Climate-KIC’ Building Technologies Accelerator (BTA), Waterweg Wonen Housing Cooperation, BIK bouw, Provincie Utrecht, TU Delft, TU Munchen, Sto Isoned, Itho Daalderop and Kingspan work together to realize a unique deep retrofit project in Vlaardingen, the Netherlands. As a result of this pilot, 12 homes have been transformed into Zero Energy Buildings.
