What are ‘green mortgages’? At the moment, there is no universal definition of green mortgages, but they usually refer to mortgages on energy efficient homes. It might be useful to expand this definition to include climate resilience as well as energy efficiency. The reasoning behind promoting green mortgages is that owners of energy-efficient homes might be less likely to default on their payments. Since energy efficiency lowers energy use, energy-efficient homes should have lower bills.

The Energy Efficient Home program entails at “attractive” and sustainable financial mechanism aimed at implementing household energy efficiency measures. The Ministry of Economy has secured EUR 120,000 to subsidize interest rates and fees charged by banks when processing applications for loans to finance the purchase and installation of heating systems using modern types of biomass (pellets, briquettes), thermal insulation, and energy efficient windows and doors.

Air ventilation is one of the top energy users in residential buildings. Smart ventilation equipment and controls help to reduce the amount of energy use attributable to ventilation in homes while maintaining high indoor air quality. Ventilation can also be used as a resource for utility grid demand response if done intelligently. A key component of the smart ventilation concept is the use of controls to ventilate more when doing so provides an energy or air quality advantage and/or a resource to the power grid, and less when it provides a disadvantage.

Building Energy Efficiency for Massive market UPtake
BEEM-UP was a Public Private Partnership collaborative project that aimed to demonstrate the economic, social and technical feasibility of retrofitting initiatives for drastically reducing the energy demand in existing residential buildings, and lay the ground for massive market uptake of such initiatives.
