The European Commission is now accepting applications for the 2019 European Green Capital and 2018 European Green Leaf awards. Applications will remain open until November 2016.

The European Green Capital Award is given each year to a European city, not necessarily a capital, which has demonstrated a well-established record of achieving high environmental standards and is committed to ongoing and ambitious goals for future sustainable development. The European Green Capital also acts as a role model to inspire and promote best practices to other European cities. All cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants can apply for the award. In countries where there is no city with more than 100,000 inhabitants, the largest city is eligible to apply.

The selection of a city to be designated European Green Capital 2018 will be assessed on the basis of twelve indicator areas:

  1. Climate change: mitigation and adaptation
  2. Local transport
  3. Green urban areas incorporation sustainable land use
  4. Nature and biodiversity
  5. Ambient air quality
  6. Quality of the acoustic environment
  7. Waste production and management
  8. Water management
  9. Waste water treatment
  10. Eco-innovation and sustainable employment
  11. Energy performance
  12. Integrated environmental management

The European Green Leaf is a competition open to cities with a population of between 20,000 and 100,000 inhabitants. Recognising success in achieving green growth, it is awarded to cities that bring green living concepts to life.

Cities applying for a European Green Leaf 2016 will be assessed under six categories:

  1. Climate change and energy performance
  2. Mobility
  3. Biodiversity and land use
  4. Quality of air and the acoustic environment
  5. Waste and green economy
  6. Water management

To help applicants through the application process, the Commission is organising two workshops.

  • For the 2019 European Green Capital competition, an applicant workshop will take place on 1 July 2016 in Brussels.
  • For the 2018 European Green Leaf competition, a web-streamed workshop will be broadcast on 13 June from 10:00 to 13:00 (Brussels time).
