The Federal Chancellor, Dr Angela Merkel, and the Federal Minister of Building, Dr Peter Ramsauer, opened the "Efficiency House Plus" in Berlin. The Federal Building Ministry’s showhouse combines energy efficiency and electric mobility on 7th December 2011. The house produces energy, which is then used to power its occupants' electric vehicles. Next year, this scheme is to be tested for one year by a family in real-life conditions.

The Federal Chancellor said: "This house shows what is already possible today. It links energy-efficient building with innovative mobility in an intelligent manner. Energy-efficient buildings and electric mobility are major keystones for speeding up the implementation of our energy strategy. There is still a lot of potential in both sectors. I am delighted that we are testing ground-breaking innovations in everyday conditions here."

As part of research into building and electric mobility, the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development has had a single-family house constructed at Fasanenstrasse 87 in Berlin-Charlottenburg which produces twice as much energy as it consumes. This electricity is to be directly fed into electric vehicles on the premises. This inhabitable prototype will demonstrate how energy-efficient building and electric mobility can be combined in real-life conditions. The real-life trials will be conducted by a family of four for one year, with Audi, BMW, Daimler, Opel and VW providing electric vehicles for three months each.

Federal Minister Ramsauer said: "In keeping with the slogan of this scheme – 'My home is my filling station' – the building produces more energy than it needs itself. This means that the energy it produces can be used to power the electric vehicles. I do not want this house to remain a prototype. That is why we have our own research programme to fund the development of such houses."

The showhouse is equipped with sophisticated photovoltaics and energy management technology and is completely recyclable.
The Efficiency House Plus can be visited before the test family moves in: it will be open from 11.00 to 18.00 hrs Tuesday to Sunday from 8 December 2011 to 29 February 2012. Contact and coordination:
