This supermarket with an approximate 1200 m2 selling area is located in a residential area close to the centre of Modena.  The renovation took place during the summer of 2016 and reopened in September 2016.

Around 50 workers were onsite per day during the 14 weeks that the retrofit works lasted. The total requalification cost (supermarket and gallery) was 2.5 M €.

Over the past couple of years this neighbourhood experienced a social degradation which encouraged the city of Modena to define a project to revitalize the area, considering both a social and functional point of view. The supermarket’s retrofitting was therefore included in the overall neighbourhood requalification.

COOP Alleanza 3.0 contributed to the retrofitting on the basis of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed at the beginning of 2016, intervening directly with up to 670,000 € to support the works in public-use areas and with 55,000 € for the public works. Sixty two workers are now employed in the renovated supermarket.

The supermarket is currently managed by COOP Alleanza 3.0, while the retrofitting process was supported by INRES (for the stages of study, design and implementation) and the CommONEnergy partners, who suggested and implemented solutions and technologies, those of which you can find in more detail on the CommONEnergy project website here.

The implementation of the innovative solutions from CommONEnergy project had several objectives and benefits:

  • reducing energy demand and thus reducing the operating costs
  • reducing demand of primary energy, thus lowering the GHG emissions and improving the building’s sustainability
  • creation of new jobs, a new class of workers with technical skills and increase of contractors coming from small and medium enterprises (SMEs)
  • improved comfort within the commercial area

A poster in Italian is also available summarising this information.
