Buildings and settlements are nowadays increasingly expected to meet higher and potentially more complex levels of performance. They should be sustainable, use zero-net energy, be healthy and comfortable, grid-friendly, yet economical to build and maintain. Buildings are central to the EU‘s energy efficiency policy. Improving the energy performance of Europe‘s building stock is crucial, not only to achieve the EU‘s 2020 targets but also to meet the longer term objectives of the climate strategy as laid down in the low carbon economy roadmap 2050.
The aim of ZERO-PLUS (Acronym of „Achieving near Zero and Positive Energy Settlements in Europe using Advanced Energy Technology“) research project is to search for buildings design for new highly energy performing buildings (H2020-EE-2015-1-PPP). In this project, a comprehensive, cost-effective modular system for Net Zero Energy (NZE) settlements will be developed and implemented in a series of case studies across the EU.
In this second booklet, the achievements of the ZERO-PLUS consortium within the project period – 1st of October 2016 to 30th of September 2017 – are reported emphasizing more on the final design and selected technologies for the four settlements (SBskin, HCPV, Solarinvent Freescoo, FIBRAN, WindRailÒ, and ABB) and the planning for realization. In each of the four case studies (UK, Italy, Cyprus and France), the following aspects are considered in more detail:
- General information of the case study
- Selection process of the technologies used in the respective case study
- Implementation of the technologies selected for the respective case study
- Monitoring and Evaluation of the technology performance.
Finally, the business case and market potential for ZERO-PLUS settlements and the dissemination activities performed by the project partners are presented.

The ZERO-PLUS project: “Achieving near Zero and Positive Energy Settlements in Europe using Advanced Energy Technology”, funded under the EC H2020 program, aims at the development and implementation of a comprehensive, cost-effective system for Net Zero Energy (NZE) settlements. The system is composed of innovative solutions for the building envelope, for building energy generation and management, and for energy management at the settlement level. The developed solutions will be implemented in four different demonstration projects throughout the EU, with varying climates and building types.
