A Catalogue of “Optimisation Scenarios” to enhance decision-making in establishing an efficient energy management programme

 

The aim of the VERYSchool project is to create awareness among the whole chain of the stakeholders and support for Improving Energy Management in School Buildings through an "Energy Navigational System", the VSNavigator web-tool, which drive on the technology selection and implementation of Optimised Scenarios.

This e-Book describes the development and creation of the Catalogue of “Optimisation Scenarios (OSs)” with the most common and cost effective energy conservation measures, both technical and behavioural, which are the answers to Organisation’s needs in terms of best practices to enhance energy efficiency, indoor comfort and cost savings. The OSs Catalogue is the kernel of the decision-making process within VSNavigator. Each OS includes recommendations for renovating the building envelope, the lighting and HVAC systems; strategies related to thermal comfort; integration of renewable energy sources, while providing on the same time suggestions for the technology to be used and estimations of capital costs, annual operation & maintenance costs, payback period, implementation timeframe, on the expected energy savings that the action will produce.

 

The OSs catalogue is not just a simple check list of energy saving measures but an online catalogue of recommendations and actions that are intelligently proposed by using “Set-Rules”. Set Rules are the heartbeat of the decision-making process within the VSNavigator database. Defined Set Rules are the mechanism which automatically proposes specific Optimisation Scenarios in an intelligent and dynamic way. The mechanisms is made by a set of algorithms which considers real-time measurement (e.g. occupancy, temperature and illuminance profiles, status of window (open or closed) while heating/cooling is ON, optimal set-back of HVAC systems, etc.) and related threshold, configuration data (e.g. operational schedules, energy supply contracts and bills, tariffs, etc.), energy behaviour (e.g. Peak/Off-Peak consumption, user interaction, etc.) and Organisation rules.

 

Ideally, each OS is associated to a specific set rule but the intelligent mechanism in VSNavigator considers that any OS implementation will produce impact on other OSs. Management of any suggested OSs, selected by the user for implementation, is possible through the link of VSNavigator with Enerit ISO 50001 software which complies with the ISO 50001 international standard. To estimate the energy impact and the potential return on investment for those scenarios requiring simulation, VSNavigator links the Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES) <Virtual Environment> software suite  to a Building Energy Management System (BEMS) that performs both monitoring and control of indoor spaces and comfort.
