Summary of current state of the art on near zero energy (NZE) settlements in Europe (D1.1) | ZERO-PLUS project
This literature review is one of the deliverables of the ZERO-PLUS project: “Achieving near Zero and Positive Energy Settlements in Europe using Advanced Energy Technology”. Its overall objective is "to gain a deep understanding of the existing state of the art on near zero-energy settlements in different European countries, and their specific design." The material presented is based on academic and professional publications, as well as national and EU databases.
The report is divided into three main sections:
- the introductory section, presents a broad discussion of the background net zero-energy settlement initiatives;
- the second section, provides detailed information on the state of the art in four technological realms: energy conservation measures; renewable energy systems; space heating and cooling systems; energy management systems;
- the third section, presents a series of case studies of actual net zero-energy settlement projects in different parts of Europe.

The ZERO-PLUS project: “Achieving near Zero and Positive Energy Settlements in Europe using Advanced Energy Technology”, funded under the EC H2020 program, aims at the development and implementation of a comprehensive, cost-effective system for Net Zero Energy (NZE) settlements. The system is composed of innovative solutions for the building envelope, for building energy generation and management, and for energy management at the settlement level. The developed solutions will be implemented in four different demonstration projects throughout the EU, with varying climates and building types.
