Smart Cities and Regions - EUSEW 2010

Following the request of the European Parliament and of the Council during the process of adoption of the Strategic Energy Technology Plan, a new initiative on energy efficiency was proposed as part of the Communication on investing in the development of low carbon technologies - smart cities and regions. The event is a broad discussion and brain-storming in the way towards defining clear objectives, milestones, instruments and financing means for such an EU wide initiative.

Objectives of the event

The Smart Cities and Regions Initiative objective is to progress faster than business-as-usual  to a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through sustainable use, production and distribution of energy in cities. The initiative focuses on:

Buildings sector-market uptake of energy efficiency measures and renewables for new and old buildings. Energy networks covering both electricity, heating and cooling applications and based on the use of innovative RES, energy efficient production options and appliances.

Transport covering sustainable mobility aspects as well as the use of alternative fuels and electricity.

New ideas are necessary on the use and integration of low carbon technologies and the smart management of energy supply and demand in cities.

The event will look for finding answers to question such as:

  • What should be the ultimate purpose of the smart cities and regions initiative?
  • What are the technology priorities for such an initiative?
  • What is the role of industry, and which partnership models have to be developed?
  • How should this action be structured?
  • What should we do at EU level, what at other levels?
