Two straw bale houses in Dievogala were built in 2008. The idea was to build modern, comfortable homes that would have all state of the art facilities, yet to use straw bales and other eco-friendly materials. Having thick straw walls and a thatched extra padded roof means that a 300 m² dwelling requires the same amount of fuel as a house of 100-150 m². The houses were roofed before doing the walls, so as to protect straw from the rain. Straw bales were compressed on site, horizontally as well as vertically, and sometimes bound with additional strings. Walls were compressed every three rows reaching the roof. The list is endless and the result - two impressive, sturdy, mindfully built eco-friendly houses.
The excursion includes the lecture about construction methods used, lessons learned and consultations.
