Why is monitoring so important in demonstration projects?

Pilot or demonstration buildings are made in order to test new innovative technologies or to demonstrate that a defined level of high building energy performance is possible in reality. These buildings are show cases that allow experts and the general public to visit and see technologies in practice. If the projects would stop after the design and the construction, the real test i.e. the energy performance in practice would not be taken. For some tasks like meeting the predicted energy consumptions, monitoring could be simply based on the analysis of the energy bills. However, this will not allow an analysis on why the energy consumptions are higher (or lower) than predicted. That’s why energy meters, temperature sensors etc. are usually installed in pilot and demonstration buildings. The level of detail of the monitoring is dependent on the task that shall be fulfilled with the building and in some cases on monitoring requirements of research programmes, often defined in monitoring guidelines
