Energiesprong into Action! Social housing as a catalyst for net-zero energy refurbishment markets   Some 50 international partners of Energiesprong gathered in Nottingham, UK during the 24 and 25 of October, 2017 to share good practice and discuss the development of the Energiesprong concept. Energiesprong Market Development Teams from the UK, Netherlands, France and Germany were joined by suppliers and housing associations to showcase the Energiesprong approach to housing retrofit and new build.

“We have to keep quality of life affordable”   Housing Europe President, Cédric van Styvendael has been one of the few non-institutional speakers who contributed to the high-level conference on clean energy financing that was organised by the European Parliament and the European Commission. Cédric outlined the key points of a strategy that can ensure that quality of life with housing as its centre can be affordable for all Europeans.

Sustainability is one of the main topics of the Housing and the Innovation Agenda that Aedes- the Association of Dutch social housing corporations- members agreed upon before the summer. In the coming years, they will make their dwellings more energy efficient and increase the pace.   On a short term basis, the sector wants to attain an average energy label B for the total stock of social dwellings by 2021. This calls for an acceleration of investment in solar panels, insulation and heating network connections.

Essential skills and innovative solutions for a fair energy transition - An initiative of Housing Europe as part of the PROF/TRAC project.    Achieving a clean energy transition in the housing sector is a hard nut to crack. Any viable strategy must aim to scale-up approaches that have already been tried and tested and not rely on targets alone. When it comes to actual practices that work on the ground, under the right conditions, public, cooperative and social housing providers are the ones that have taken the lead in getting the job done.

In order to stimulate the dialogue in relation to the revision of the EED and the EPBD, MEPs, Jakop Dalunde and Fredrick Federley, in collaboration with Housing Europe, the European Property Federation (EPF) and International Union of Tenants (IUT) hosted a lunch seminar in the European Parliament on 22 March devoted to discussions on how the EED and the EPBD could promote a coherent and holistic approach to reducing energy use in buildings in a cost-effective way.

Energy poverty is a serious concern in our societies while more and more people realize that it should be a social right. As a follow-up to the European Parliament Initiative Report on the antipoverty target in the light of increasing household costs, MEP Tamas Meszerics (Greens, Hungary) initiated the production of a Handbook on Energy Poverty.

At the recent French monitoring committee for the project Transition Zero, the social housing provider Vilogia in Northern France has announced that, with the support of Greenflex (coordinating the activities of the EU project Transition Zero in France) a call for tender to receive proposals from construction/renovation companies in order to get the first French projects under Transition Zero running was launched at the beginning of October, 2016.
