Buildings are responsible for 40% of energy consumption and 36% of CO2 emissions in the EU. The residential sector represents 75% of the European building stock and, on average, more than 34% of CO2 emissions on cities’ territories. This sector is therefore a key action area for all local and regional authorities who are committed to ambitious energy and CO2 saving targets.

Many project promoters lack the skills and capacity to set up, implement and finance ambitious low-energy and clean energy building projects. This is why the European Commission has set up several tools to help project promoters finance the energy refurbishment of buildings. The ManagEnergy and FEDARENE webinar will focus on two of them: Project Development Assistance (PDA) and Home Renovation Services, both funded under Horizon 2020.

The project embraces the thorough renovation a building from the 1930s. The CPAS of Forest Municipality of Brussels brought together its various services there in 2005. To preserve the façade (exterior walls, windows and doors), the walls have been insulated from the inside by 20 cm of cellulose.

A large part of the stock of Italian educational buildings have undertaken energy retrofit interventions, thanks to European funds allocated by complex technical-administrative calls. In these projects, the suggested retrofit strategies are often selected based on the common best practices (considering average energy savings) but are not supported by proper energy investigations.

The building façade not only provides the aesthetic signature of a building, but also important functions, such as daylight provision, glare protection, solar gain management and visual contact with the outside, which make the building usable and energy efficient. These functions often oppose each other, so the selection and design of façade systems and their control for a certain building application should depend on those functions that the designer wants to promote to the detriment of the other functions.
