Renew School: Sustainable school buildings in Europe with prefabricated timber elements - Examples and experiences   This best-practice brochure, released in the framework of the EU project RENEW SCHOOL presents an overview of innovative school renovation projects realised throughout Europe. The technical signpost, released in the framework of the RENEW SCHOOL project, is the collection of the best performing technological solutions that can be applied in school buildings and kindergartens, which use timber façade and undergo renovation. The technical signpost should guide future renovations recommending the solutions that will reduce risks, avoid negative consequences that are robust, tested and verified.

RENEW SCHOOL project aims at retrofitting a large number of school buildings to Nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) standard. The Project assignment is to motivate and to give municipalities, school owners, companies as well as end-users appropriate tools and solutions for renovating existing school buildings to nZEB standard. The project promotes and increases high-energy performance and prefabricated timber-based renovation of school buildings in Europe.

Eighteen case studies with high energy performance have been collected from all European project partner countries of the IEE project RENEW SCHOOL. For choosing the right buildings as frontrunners, the project consortium set some prioritised criteria. The two main criteria were the selection of typical educational buildings (also incl. kindergartens) and the use of prefabricated timber elements during the renovation or construction of the buildings.
