The 2030 Framework for climate and energy sets as EU-wide targets for 2030 a 40% cut in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 level, and at least a 27% share of renewable energy consumption. For the power system, this means a share of at least 45% of electricity demand generated from renewable sources (European Commission), compared to 27.5% in 2014 (Eurostat).

In 2017, renewable energy accounted for 19.5 % of the total energy used for heating and cooling in the European Union. This is a significant increase from 10.4 % in 2004. Increases in industrial sectors, services and households contributed to this growth. Aerothermal, geothermal and hydrothermal heat energy captured by heat pumps was also taken into account if reported by countries.

A report recently launched by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) says that the geopolitical and socio-economic consequences of a new energy age may be as profound as those which accompanied the shift from biomass to fossil fuels two centuries ago.

In 2017, the share of energy from renewable sources in gross final consumption of energy, in the European Union (EU), reached 17.5%, up from 17.0% in 2016 and more than double the share in 2004 (8.5%), the first year for which the data are available.
The share of renewables in gross final consumption of energy is one of the headline indicators of the Europe 2020 strategy. The EU's target is to obtain 20% of energy in gross final consumption of energy from renewable sources by 2020 and at least 32% by 2030.

The Romanian Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE) has approved 3 orders that facilitate the commercialization of electricity generated from renewable energy sources by prosumers in facilities with a maximum installed capacity of 27 kW.
These orders provide the regulatory framework to ensure that end-consumers can be consumers and be paid for electricity supplied to the grid, ANRE said on its website.

Several Mediterranean islands are not connected to the main electricity grid yet meaning that independent local grids cater for their power requirements, mainly using imported fossil fuels whose resources scarcity, especially during the high-demand summer months, is a significant challenge.
