Heating, domestic hot water

REbuild is international: every year the event presents the best case studies in Italy and across the world, to find radical, concrete, effective, market-based approaches. For this reason, the convention is held both in Italian and in English and involves several foreign speakers in order to hear firsthand experiences   (RE) MAKING CITIES

European researchers are developing a device that stores and uses solar energy to provide both hot water and mechanical ventilation for multifamily houses. Moreover, an app linked to the machine monitors the users’ energy consumption   Nowadays households wanting to switch to solar energy have to deal with variability over time. In addition, if they are part of a condominium, the ability to store solar energy in an apartment without taking up significant living space is a big issue.

The E2VENT system that we will develop is an external thermal refurbishment solution with external cladding and air cavity (fig.1).   The distinctive feature of this system is the Smart Modular Heat Recovery Unit allowing us to recover energy from the extracted air while performing the air renewal using double flux heat exchanger in the air cavity (fig.2).

With more than 80% of the heat delivered to buildings coming from obsolete, inefficient and polluting boilers, decarbonising this sector is crucial. A steep increase in the current 20% share of renewables in heating and cooling is required, together with improving the efficiencies of our heating and cooling systems, in order to achieve the Paris Agreement goals.

Drastically lowering energy consumption in buildings – and indeed, developing nearly-zero energy buildings (nZEBs) and positive-energy (or ‘smart’) buildings that can interact with the grid – is a cornerstone of Europe’s climate and energy policy.
