The Fraunhofer Institute of Building Physics IBP deals with research, development, testing, demonstration and consulting in the fields of building physics. This includes noise control, sound insulation measures in buildings, optimization of audibility conditions in audiences, energy saving measures, lighting technology, questions of indoor climate as well as aspects of moisture and weathering protection, the preservation of building structures and of historical monuments.
The Institute co-operates with partners from all sectors of industry in the development and introduction on the market of new and sustainable building materials, components and systems. Contractual partners are enterprises engaged in the fields of civil engineering, mechanical and plant engineering, building contractors and architects, planning and licensing authorities as well as those who commission public and private building research.
Efficient and in some cases unique test facilities permit the carrying out of complicated building physical examinations. The Institute is officially recognized by the construction supervision authorities for the testing, monitoring and certification of building products and types of construction in Germany and all over Europe. Four testing laboratories of the Institute have received flexible accreditation from the German Accreditation System for Testing (DAP). They are entitled to set up new or to modify existing test procedures.
The Holzkirchen branch with its outdoor testing site, which is exposed to extreme climatic conditions, offers the possibility of investigating building structures, building elements and materials as well as system components for heating, ventilation and energy systems on a 1:1 scale under real climatic and user conditions. Modern measuring techniques and calculation methods support the development and optimization of building products especially for use in practice. Investigations in model chambers, on the test field and in the actual buildings serve to test, from the building physical viewpoint, the quality of components and total systems for both new buildings and those requiring renovation. In addition, the Holzkirchen branch has a testing laboratory for moisture/mortar/radiation/emissiona, flexibly accredited.
