The awareness for energy efficient buildings has increased significantly over the last years. Therefore the community has the desire to set an example and use the new nursery. Besides high energy efficiency, ecological and economical sustainability are also in the focus. The aim is to design and build a plus energy building that consists to a large extent out of natural and renewable materials.

The jury of the BMWi (Federal German Ministry of Economy and Technology) competition 2011 assessed the building as follows: "The compact kindergarden building offers optimal and various spaces for the children's urge to move. The inner organisation is clear and well-arranged. ... The maximum net energy use requested by the competition was clearly under but due to a careful, well adjusted building and energy concept. Based on the thermal and electrical use of solar energy (pv) the primary energy use is reduced by half if compared to the reference building. The integrated planning process ensures a good coordination between architecture, building physics and building service technologies and includes the building users with their ¨pedagogical concept."

Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics has been involved in the project since the start of the design. A presentation of the building design is available on the website of the BMWi competition 2011 "Architecture with Energy".
