SB Alliance, World Green Building council & UNEP-SBCI sign groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding

The MoU is to provide a framework of cooperation and understanding and to facilitate collaboration between the parties to further their shared goals and objectives. It is concentrating on the development of core and complimentary protocols to define a methodology to measure and report the energy and greenhouse gas emissions from building operations related to the built environment. The objectives of this MoU will be achieved through regular dialogue meetings between the Parties.
The Parties have agreed the following preliminary overarching themes for this MoU:
  • Globally consistent metrics and protocols for measuring, accounting and reporting of energy use and the resulting impacts particularly with respect to greenhouse gas emission of buildings.
  • Joint leadership and collaboration in the development of the core metric and protocol.
  • Discrete leadership and decision rights for complimentary metrics/ programmes with support from the Parties.

Note:
  • United Nations Environment Programme is the leading organization within the United Nations system in the field of environment and has as a major area of focus of its global mandate, the conservation, protection, enhancement and support of nature and natural resources, including biological diversity, worldwide.
  • WGBC is a union of country Green Building Councils. Its purpose is to support the establishment of new country GBCs as well to facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing to drive the uptake of green building through a common global voice for Green Building.
  • SBA is a not-for-profit organization that has the goal to develop common metrics that can be used to monitor and compare internationally ecological behavior and sustainable performance through the different voluntary rating schemes. SB Alliance also works to develop a greater level of commonality between the different assessment tools to improve understanding, compatibility and take-up.
