This paper focuses on the definition of Nearly zero energy buildings (NZEBs) that represent one of the greatest opportunities to increase energy savings in Europe. As this term appears to be subject to different interpretations, the paper explores the NZEB literature to provide an overview of definitions. The analysis underlines inconsistencies and critical issues among them.

IPEEC’s Buildings Energy Efficiency Task Group (BEET) has just released its seventh publication on energy efficiency in the buildings sector, BEET 7, which focuses on zero energy or emissions buildings (ZEBs). While the precise term varies, ZEBs generally refer to highly efficient buildings that use renewable technology to produce as much energy as they consume over the course of a year. The difficulty lies in the variety of metrics used to establish ‘zero’ energy or emissions, in addition to different energy consumption and production boundaries that make direct comparisons hard.

The 5. Fachsymposium Brennpunkt Alpines Bauen is dedicated to the topic low tech. Highly efficient buildings are possible by simple, but durable, sustainable and locally available building components to satisfy the needs of users. The day after the symposium there will be a guided tour to Salzburg to visit completed projects. For more info and registration please visit the website https://www.itg-salzburg.at/veranstaltung/brennpunkt-alpines-bauen-351.
