They look like ordinary windows but they're not. Inside each pane, there is a continuous flow of distilled water and glycol. The windows have been designed by researchers and architects working to create the energy-efficient buildings of tomorrow. The technology is being tested at an experimental pavilion in Sofia.

The main goal of the EU Horizon 2020 project CoNZEBs was to identify technology combinations for multi-family houses that fulfil the Nearly Zero-Energy Building (NZEB) requirements but result in lower investment costs if compared to the typical (mainstream) NZEB technology combinations.

Today’s energy market is rapidly transforming with the diffusion of new decentralized energy actors. In this scenario, buildings play a relevant role for the energy transition that European countries are facing. They are expected to shift from passive energy consumers to flexible energy prosumers able to produce and store energy, modify their thermal and electric demands and share data with other buildings connected in smart energy communities. We are already in this transition phase with several pilot projects ongoing.

The European Commission aims to analyse the competitiveness of the European heating and cooling industry. Four case studies of successful and competitive deployment of heating and cooling solutions at a city level from selected organizations support this analysis. The case studies aim to illustrate how competitive renewable energy technologies such as solar-thermal, biomass, biogas and heat pump are in the context of different local factors across Europe, and what are their impacts on local communities.
