This brochure presents the main findings of study conducted by the Dutch scientific research institute TNO on the potential impact of Low-Emissivity glazing on energy and CO2 savings in Europe. The study shows that nearly 100 million tonnes of CO2 emissions could be cut annually thanks to the widespread use of Low-E insultating glass units in all European buildings. These potential savings equal to one third of the EU's emissions reduction target for buildings.

Low-E glass considerably increases the energy saving properties of windows compared to “basic” double glazing. Low-E glass units:

  • Reduce heat loss and allow passive solar heat gain
  • Reduce energy consumption required to heat a building
  • Reduce energy related CO2 emissions
  • Help to reduce heating bills

The technology of Low-Emissivity glass, its applications and availabilities are presented  in the brochure, along with the research methodology followed by TNO. Energy and CO2 savings from using Low-E glass in double-glazed and triple glazed-units are quantified and presented country by country and at EU level. This research underlines the need for concerted policy actions at both EU and national levels to step-up the use of energy-efficient glass technologies.
