A very efficient office building in the South of France

Abstract | This passive office building has been built in 2006 near Valence, in the South of France. The three levels building (2618 m²) uses insulating bricks (50 cm) and wood, strong insulation of the grass roofs and low emissivity glazing. Heating is produced by a gas condensing boiler providing hot water to radiators and to the balanced air handling unit (with heat recovery) of the ventilation system. The ventilation system (4000 m³/h) includes also an earth to air heat exchanger (480 m length) and a control through sensors for occupants detection in meeting rooms. There is no domestic hot water in the building and no active air conditioning system. In order to reduce the electricity consumption, employees use laptop computers with no uninterruptible power supply. The energy consumption after one year is as follows: 25.8 kWh/m²/year of gas for heating (gross calorific value), 21.8 kWh/m²/year of electricity, 82 kWh/m²/year of primary energy.
