The EDUCATE Framework for Curriculum Development has been conceived to facilitate the incorporation of principles and practices of sustainable environmental design and energy efficiency in the education of architects. This document has been elaborated to offer a basic underlying conceptual support for articulating programme design and development – yet, without specifying a detailed ‘prototypical’ curriculum in architecture so as to recognise necessity for flexibility, autonomy, cultural diversity and innovation amongst higher education institutions – in order to contribute to bridge current divides between sustainability-related knowledge and creative design and promote the implementation of sustainable environmental design in higher and professional education.
To these aims, this Framework for Curriculum Development is primarily addressed to Heads of Schools and Departments, Course Directors and all those members of staff of higher education institutions and regulatory bodies that deal regularly and directly with programme design, development and degrees’ accreditation, so as to contribute to the advance of pedagogical provisions for architectural curricula in the field of environmental sustainability at each level of academic and pre/post-professional training.
