Counteracting Urban Heat Island Effects in a Global Climate Change Scenario

The UHI Project is implemented through the CENTRAL EUROPE Programme co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The main target of this transnational project is the development of mitigation, risk prevention and management strategies to counteract the urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon. Mitigation strategies consist in the adoption of urban and land planning models that prevent the establishment of UHI. On the other hand, adaptation strategies aim at reducing the impact of UHI related phenomena, such as summer bioclimatic discomfort. Its general objective is to call attention to the man-made risks arising from this microclimatic phenomenon and its interactions with climate change. Moreover, the project intends to establish relevant policies and practical actions to alleviate the urban heat island phenomenon.


The outcomes of the project and the deeper knowledge gained through the analysis of the work are published as an open access book by Springer. In its first part, the book provides an in-depth analysis of the phenomenon of UHI and its relationship to the built environment, and in its second part, presents the pilot actions in eight European cities and explores measures for counteracting urban heat islands. The UHI management strategies described in this publication can be integrated into national sustainable development approaches for urban planning.
