As a visible sign of the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energies, a former coal silo and heating plant in Basel is covered with coloured PV modules. The entire site is under heritage protection, the remodelled building was required to match the style and colour scheme of the site.

The Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy has given the goahead for energy conservation measures in local communities in four rounds. Municipalities can apply to have as much as 40% of eligible costs covered in works on buildings they own and use. Slovenia earmarked EUR 25 million for the energy renovation project of which EUR 21.25 million or 85% comes from the European Union’s cohesion funds.

Cooling demand is expected to increase almost 60% by 2030 in Europe. District cooling (DC) can support satisfying this demand in a sustainable way by utilising the most efficient cooling supply options available and distributing the produced cooling to consumers rather than using stand‐alone, often inefficient and poorly maintained distributed systems. This also has the potential to significantly decrease primary energy consumption.

A recent study carried out by an international group of building scientists showed that Estonia is among the countries with the most energy efficient buildings in Europe.   Among the analysis of NZEB energy performance of buildings in four countries (Estonia, Norway, Finland and Sweden), Estonia has shown to have the most energy efficient nearly zero energy buildings.
