Concept:   The countries in the Central and Eastern European (CEE) region and in the former Soviet Union republics (CIS region) have the most energy-poor people in Europe.    This is mainly due to high energy prices and poor energy efficiency of the buildings, heating systems and household appliances.

Stijn Verbeke is senior researcher at EnergyVille/VITO and University of Antwerp. He is an innovator on smart buildings and data-driven tools for improving the energy performance of buildings and districts.   Stijn holds a PhD degree in applied engineering and lectures courses on building physics and energy performance of buildings for engineering students at the University of Antwerp.

re-MODULEES is a project funded under the EU's Horizon 2020 programme, having as an overall aim the creation of the EU-wide retrofit market activation framework in the residential building sector, supported by digital and physical Renovation Hubs at the member state and EU level.   The re-MODULEES project officially started on 1 November 2020, and its kick-off meeting took place on 4 & 5 November.

The H2020 project AmBIENCe has introduced the novel concept of Active Energy Performance Contracting (AEPC), which looks to harness a building’s energy performance potential by incorporating flexibility and demand response in addition to energy efficiency measures, under one energy performance contract.

SmartEn brought out this paper with the aim to set out its position on the need to quantify the Demand Side Flexibility of a building as a component of the local energy system’s carbon footprint.   In this paper, smartEn outlines the benefits of a building energy performance quantification metric that incorporates DSF and recommends an ideal format of expressing the Actual Performance Metric.
