ICLEI Members Helsinki (Finland), Copenhagen (Denmark), and Stavanger (Norway), together with Amsterdam, Paris Region, and Tallinn have joined forces through the AI4Cities project, a new EU-funded project challenging companies to develop artificial intelligence (AI) solutions in the fields of energy and mobility. These solutions are aimed at reducing cities’ greenhouse gas emissions and supporting them in meeting their climate change commitments. ICLEI Europe is an expert project partner.

The EU Energy Efficiency Directive requires Member States to submit long-term strategies for mobilising investment in the renovation of building stock within their National Energy Efficiency Plans. Recent changes to the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) require the adoption of long-term renovation strategies as part of the National Energy and Climate Plans. The amended EPBD shows a clearer path towards achieving low- and zero-emission building stock in the EU by 2050, underpinned by national roadmaps and public and private investment.

This prestigious title is awarded annually to a European city that is a leader in sustainable development, including environmental, social and economic considerations. The title includes a €350,000 prize to further bolster exceptional sustainability efforts. Only 12 cities have been awarded this title, ten of which are ICLEI Members.   For the past year, ICLEI Member Oslo (Norway) held the title of 2019 European Green Capital. On 10-11 January 2020, they officially handed this honour over to Lisbon.

On 1 January 2020, the Electricity Regulation EU/2019/943 entered into force. An important part of the new electricity market design, agreed under the Clean energy for all European’s package, the regulation establishes the fundamental principles for an efficient electricity market.

The EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW), organised by the European Commission, is the biggest event dedicated to renewable energy sources and efficient energy use in Europe.   It brings together public authorities, private companies, NGOs and consumers to promote initiatives to save energy and move towards renewables for clean, secure and efficient power. The event provides a unique platform for sharing ideas and knowhow, to showcase projects, network and gain immediate feedback from policymakers and citizens alike.

In accordance with the Carbon-Neutral Helsinki 2035 Action Plan, the city launched 147 measures to reduce emissions and to attain the goal of carbon neutrality. This means that after 2035, activities taking place in Helsinki will not contribute to future warming of the climate. No greenhouse gases will be emitted from transportation and the city’s buildings will be heated and electricity produced without resulting emissions.

On 11th December Ursula von Der Leyen, recently elected president of the European Commission, presented the new European Climate plan called "Green Deal". Emblematically, this is one of the first acts of the new Commission and this stresses the importance of climate action for the new European government.
