As COVID-19 cases rose and lockdown measures came into effect around the world, commercial building occupancy dropped dramatically, from 100% to almost zero in the space of a week in many places. Many might expect near-zero occupancy to mean near-zero energy consumption, but new data reveals that this is not the case. In fact, many offices, shopping malls, and entertainment complexes are consuming 80% or more of their usual full-occupancy energy levels, highlighting huge cost implications for businesses, building owners, and the environment.

This online course (~6 hours) covers key topics on how to resume activities, safely operate buildings and specifically use densely occupied indoor spaces during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The course is based on the REHVA COVID-19 guidance documents and its modules provide basic theoretical knowledge with hands-on information taught by REHVA experts.

EU Member States are currently developing recovery plans as part of their existing strategies to address the COVID-19 pandemic. Sustainable energy investments are an important pillar of such strategies, which require significant public financing as a lever for private investment.

Energy-efficient upgrades to HVAC systems at schools and other critical buildings can prevent the spread of COVID-19.  Federal funding and tax incentives to make these building upgrades could catalyze a market already projected for growth.  The EU has already embraced building upgrades as part of the European Green Deal framework in its recovery package.
