The occupant density in buildings is one of the major and overlooked parameters affecting the energy consumption and virus transmission risk in buildings. HVAC systems energy consumption is highly dependent on the number of occupants. Studies on the transmission of COVID-19 virus have indicated a direct relationship between occupant density and COVID-19 infection risk. This study aims to seek the optimum occupant distribution patterns that account for the lowest number of infected people and minimum energy consumption.

The former fire station is a listed building, which was built in 1926 by architect Franz Baumgartner in the style of the architecture at the lake Wörther See. It is now used as a music school. The building is characterised by its strongly articulated gates on the main street façade. The large roof area is broken up by an enormous front gable. The building comprises two full floors, an attic, a partial basement and a turret room. The market town of Velden am Wörthersee implemented a comprehensive thermal-energetic renovation of the building.

ZERO-PLUS is a comprehensive, cost-effective approach for the design, construction and monitoring of Net Zero Energy Settlements (NZESs). The proposed approach was applied in four case studies in different climatic settings, France, UK, Italy and Cyprus. ZERO-PLUS settlements exceed the state of art by setting performance objectives requiring improvement relative to other energy-efficient buildings.

The purpose of the report is to present an overview of the underlying programs and procedures that have been created and integrated in order to provide functionality to the ZERO-PLUS monitoring schema.
