This online course (~6 hours) covers key topics on how to resume activities, safely operate buildings and specifically use densely occupied indoor spaces during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The course is based on the REHVA COVID-19 guidance documents and its modules provide basic theoretical knowledge with hands-on information taught by REHVA experts.

The estimated average gap between calculated and actual energy performance of the European building stock is 25% for energy performance and 1.5% for comfort performance (as scored by building occupants). Comprehensive research has shown that poorly commissioned and operated building management systems are often responsible for this gap, generally caused by the lack of appropriate and coherent Quality Management Systems (QMS) for building performance.

CEN-CE: There will be a huge financial support from the European Commission via the Green Deal. A building renovation roadmap is announced. New challenges are nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) and low carbon footprint. What could be in your opinion the contribution of HVAC professionals? Do you think that the HVAC professionals are sufficiently prepared for the new challenges?

I wouldn’t call the first building I worked in very smart. My desk was in a low walled cube in the middle of the “cube city” surrounded by cinder block walls. The air quality depended on what section you were in, and the temperature varied every 20 feet. There were no crowd-based thermostats to keep everyone happy. Almost every air vent had a custom deflector taped on it to personalize the comfort of the one who applied it. If you were cold, your best option was to put on a sweater.
