The constant supply of energy is something we often take for granted. Securing that energy supply is vital. It ensures our homes are heated – or air-conditioned – that we can phone, use lights and computers and that our hospitals, public transport and other essential services, like water distribution, function.
How does the EU contribute to assure energy security to its nearly 500 million citizens? And what happens if the security of that energy supply is threatened?

The World Energy Council’s Energy Trilemma Index tool, produced in partnership with Oliver Wyman, ranks countries on their ability to provide sustainable energy through 3 dimensions: Energy security, Energy equity (accessibility and affordability), Environmental sustainability. The ranking measures overall performance in achieving a sustainable mix of policies and the balance score highlights how well a country manages the trade-offs of the Trilemma with "A" being the best. Use this interactive Index to assess the sustainability of national energy policies.

The present document constitutes the Implementation Plan (IP) in actuation of the European Stakeholders Declaration for Action 4 “Increase the resilience and security of the energy system" (19 November 2016). It gathers the consensus of 15 country representatives about the R&I actions to be implemented in coordination, in order to achieve the challenging targets set in the Declaration.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Internet of Things (IoT) have assumed a key role for energy efficiency in buildings: sensors (temperature sensor in a room, electrical power measuring device), actuators (HVAC room controller, motor), complex devices (PLC providing home, building or industrial automation), monitoring systems are a common standard that involves a wide range of stakeholders – from designers, to integrators, to operators and users.

The automated home and office market is predicted to grow quickly in the next few years. But as reports of cyber attacks increase, is it still possible for a home to be a castle in the age of smart buildings, or are we lowering the drawbridge to hackers?
Smart buildings offer better energy efficiency and the kind of futuristic mod cons that appeal to many consumers, but some experts warn our appetite for new technology is putting us at risk from increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks.
