The European Commission’s Renovation Wave, unveiled earlier this month, is a breath of fresh air in a carbon-heavy sector. It provides a comprehensive and inclusive set of actions aiming at accelerating renovation of our buildings and homes in the EU, tackling the associated challenges head on.

Deep renovation is a key action to drastically reduce energy demand and achieve the EU vision of a decarbonised building stock by 2050. However, only 1% of European buildings are being renovated yearly and shallow retrofits persist with low impact on energy consumption. The StepUP project is developing new technologies and solutions to make building renovation more attractive and affordable.

Concept and objectives: EU countries have drawn up strategies reflected in their National Energy Efficiency Action Plans that include provision of an overview of the country's national building stock, identification of key policies that the country intends to use to stimulate renovations and provision of an estimate of the expected energy savings that will result from renovations.

The 10th edition of our Expert talk hosts Adrian Joyce, Secretary General of EuroACE and Campaign Director of the Renovate Europe Campaign, which was initiated by EuroACE in 2011 in order to stop energy waste in buildings. Its ambition is to reduce the energy demand of the building stock in the EU by 80% by 2050 as compared to 2005.
