Cities represent three quarters of energy consumption and 80% of CO2 emissions worldwide, and with urbanisation expected to continue, a growing number of ‘Lighthouse’ cities across Europe have taken up the challenge of testing new ‘smart’ energy-saving solutions in large-scale test-beds under the impulse of European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

REMOURBAN (REgeneration MOdel for smart URBAN transformation) is a lighthouse Horizon 2020 project whose ultimate goal is to design and validate an urban regeneration model in the cities of Nottingham (UK), Valladolid (Spain) and Tepebasi/Eskisehir (Turkey), while maximising its replication potential in two follower cities, Seraing (Belgium) and Miskolc (Hungary).

The challenge to develop smart cities is not only a technological challenge but also a regulatory, financial and social one. In fact, some non-technical issues may be more challenging to resolve than the technological barriers and the success of a project can depend on this.

Nine Lighthouse Projects pledged closer cooperation in their efforts towards low carbon and resource efficient urban spaces
In their efforts to deliver and replicate Smart City solutions, the EU’s nine Lighthouse projects formally signed a Cooperation Manifesto in Nottingham (UK) on 23 March, 2017.

Lighthouse project Remourban will be opening its doors this month with its first study tour taking place in the lighthouse city Nottingham, UK.
Behind the tour are the project partners Nottingham City Council and Nottingham Trent University. The tour has been organised in cooperation with the Action Cluster on Integrated Planning of the European Innovation Partnership on Smart Cities and Communities and the Smart Cities Information System.

Due to take place in Barcelona between 15-17 November, the Smart City Expo summit is designed to mix ground-breaking technology with urban reality. With fellow Lighthouse projects and the EIP SCC, REMOURBAN will be sharing a stand equipped with a user-friendly touchscreen display designed to help the event's 14,000 visitors to walk through the projects' endeavours.
