When it comes to heating, retiree Lucy Craig’s bungalow in north London is high tech. A self-professed gadget lover, when she refurbished eight years ago, she was keen to find the most carbon friendly methods for keeping her home warm. She settled on heat pumps. Outside her house, all that can be seen of the pump is an innocuous metal box. Inside the machine is a closed circuit of liquid that cycles in a pipe running from the box outdoors to a water tank indoors.

Concept: Increasing energy costs and inadequate energy efficiency progress keep energy poverty at high levels in the EU. Energy poverty in the private rented sector (PRS) represents a particular category and of major concern since it is a phenomenon that is rising. Due to the difficulty to identify and measure energy-poor households in the PRS and the lack of information and split incentives, it is difficult to adequately address the issue.

Concept: A company’s energy saving initiatives are influenced mainly by numerous financial and organisational factors. High investment costs slow the adoption of energy efficient measures in SMEs. The solution is to make it easier for SMEs and to promote energy efficiency as an opportunity. The EU-funded DEESME project will develop a new approach to enable SMEs to manage their energy transition in line with EU policies.

Around 50 million households in the European Union are estimated to be living in energy poverty – or energy vulnerability, unable to afford the energy needed to adequately heat or cool their homes. This is caused by a combination of factors including high energy costs, low household incomes and energy inefficient buildings, and can have severe impacts on health and wellbeing.

The Efficient Buildings Community has just developed a new set of recommendations for European and National decision-makers. The eight recommendations are grounded in the experience of the Mediterranean local authorities and they aim to bring the lessons learned in the discussion about the next generation of energy policies: the European Green Deal, issued by the Commission last December, and the recovery plans in response to Covid-19, currently underway in each Member State.
