The Commission has launched the first call for proposals under the Innovation Fund, one of the world's largest programmes for the demonstration of innovative low-carbon technologies, financed by revenues from the auction of emission allowances from the EU's Emissions Trading System. The Innovation Fund will finance breakthrough technologies for renewable energy, energy-intensive industries, energy storage, and carbon capture, use and storage.

Decarb City Pipes 2050 - Transition roadmaps to energy efficient, zero-carbon urban heating and cooling Climate urgency calls on all political levels to act more stringent and faster. This proposal is the first to unite cities across Europe to work out actionable, spatially differentiated transition roadmaps to decarbonise heating and cooling for buildings in 2050, taking up the challenge to phase out natural gas in heating.

On Monday 29 June, the Just Transition Platform (JTP) was launched to help Member States to draw up their territorial Just Transition Plans and access funding from the over €150 billion Just Transition Mechanism. This online Platform will provide technical and advisory support for public and private stakeholders in coal and other carbon-intensive regions, with easy access to information on funding opportunities and sources of technical assistance.

Improving the energy efficiency of buildings is a key tool to achieving these targets. Buildings consume the greatest share of energy and have the largest energy savings potential.

Within the CULTURAL-E project cultural and climatic considerations are incorporated into the Plus Energy Building (PEB) designs, which are being implemented in residential demo buildings located in four European climatic areas. As a means of contributing to enhancing the buildings’ pre and post occupancy developments, a study has been conducted, which aims at upgrading PEB’s energy performance predictions which are guided by users' everyday practices.
