The price of PV (photo voltaic) solar panels has dropped by as much as a third this year alone, hastening the introduction of a low-carbon economy and reducing the time period when renewable energy needs public subsidy. And there is a boom at present as consumers try to install the low-cost equipment before the level of handouts via the government feed-in tariff (FIT) is reassessed in April next year.

The solar feed-in tariff, the price of solar-generated electricity, could drop below 0.80 yuan (12.5 cents) for each kilowatt-hour (kWh) by 2015, which would be on par with conventional coal-fired power tariffs by that time, according to s report by the Energy Research Institute, led by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). The report also said China was expected to produce 90,000 tonnes of polysilicon this year, representing 80 percent of its domestic demand.

Due to the oversupply of solar PV modules, some of the larger suppliers have been able to capitalise on their strong brands and competitive pricing to increase their market share.  Despite a tough quarter for the industry, 8 of the 10 largest solar PV module suppliers increased their shipments over Q1´11, and the 10 largest suppliers accounted for over half of the global market.
